It’s That Time of Year
Well, another year is coming to an end and boy, what a year it has been! Thanks to the support of all my friends who tune in regularly, streaming has been a blast! We started Lift Gaming at the end of 2014 and I see great things on the horizon for us and everyone associated. But enough jibber jabbin’ from me and on to the good stuff: My favorite games of the year!
Praise The Sun!
I’m sure you saw this coming a mile away, but my personal Game of The Year is the one and only Dark Souls 2! I’ve sunk over 400 hours into the game since it came out in March and don’t regret it in the least. Sure, it didn’t have the amazing, interwoven level design that Hidetaka Miyazaki is known for, nor did it have his creative boss fights. His absence in the design process was felt for sure. That said, Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura directed a phenomenal game none the less. Dark Souls 2 took the Dark Souls formula and cleaned up the engine, expanded the weapons and spells and polished some of the rough edges. The online elements of Dark Souls 2 were enhanced as well, creating several more covenants to join and all new ways to troll fellow players (Rat Covenant anyone?).
I was wary of designating Dark Souls 2 as my Game of The Year originally, but the release of the Crowns trilogy solidified my choice. From Software managed to address some of the complaints leveled at Dark Souls 2 with their DLC. They brought back the crushing difficulty, interesting level design and unique environments to manipulate in the Crowns Trilogy. They introduced some new, intriguing lore for people who felt Dark Souls 2 was a bit shallow on the story compared to earlier games. Rarely do I feel like I got my money’s worth from DLC , but From Software really hit it out of the park. I look forward to playing the new content From Software will be adding to the game in 2015 with the new “Scholar of the First Sin” remastered edition. Though let it be said, we need less remastered editions, more original content in 2015! I give From Software a pass because it seems like they are adding new content along with the Dark Souls 2 remaster.
- Wolfenstein: The New Order
- Far Cry 4
- Shovel Knight
- Five Nights at Freddy’s 2
- The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
- Bayonetta 2
- Super Time Force Ultra
- Mario Kart 8
What Will 2015 Bring?
I’m sure I missed or didn’t mention a ton of great games, but for me, these are my favorite games of the year and ones I feel I will come back to in 2015. Hopefully 2015 brings with it some great games and less let downs than 2014 held. Personally, I can’t wait for The Witcher 3 and Uncharted 4. I look forward to streaming more and helping Lift Gaming grow. What about you guys? What were your favorite games of 2014 and what games have you riding the hype train into 2015?
